James Arthur Vineyard Tour

The Rolling hills of James Arthur Vineyards Raymond Nebraska

It starts with the contour of the land. Rolling hills with a south facing slope and good drainage are best.

Next comes the soil. Rocky, sandy soil. With water far below, but within reach. Finally, wind is essential. Brisk winds that keep unwanted intruders away. All the ingredients for growing grapes to create award-winning wine. This is Nebraska, and this is wine country.

Yes, Nebraska - once known as a prolific place for growing grapes. Before the Prohibition, some 48,000 vines grew in Nebraska.

Decades later, James Arthur Vineyards is resurrecting this once-prolific industry. Two-hundred fifty vines planted in 1994 have turned into thousands.

Grapevines love Nebraska soil. Their growth at JAV is phenomenal - 20 to 25 feet per year.

James Arthur Vineyards has more than 9,000 vines at the main site near Raymond, Neb., and also contracts with 22 area grape growers. So you know you'll be getting 100% Nebraska grown wine.

James Arthur Vineyards produces a variety of grapes, primarily French-American hybrids and American parietals. Some still must prove their mettle. Several varieties -- St. Croix, LaCrosse, Edelweiss, Vignoles, and Frontenac - have a penchant for Nebraska soil and Midwest weather. They are the mainstays of James Arthur Vineyards.

Harvest time at James Arthur Vineyards comes in August. Each grape is hand-picked because care is critical when producing fine wine. The grapes are then brought to the winery where they are carefully crafted into the finest of JAV wine. The harvest season usually lasts into the middle of September.
